The pictures you see of the words Look Right painted into the pavement were taken in London and Dublin. As pictured, the words are suggesting to pedestrians that they look right to avoid the crazy european drivers in UK. You know, the drivers that drive on the wrong side of the road.
At first glance, you might assume that I’m taking a political and economic stance. I might be looking to the right, and moving that direction; backing the capitalist economy. Otherwise, you could assume that I’m looking right, and subsequently going left; suggesting socialism. I grew up in Canada (capitalism bordering on socialism) but now live in the US (traditionally capitalist). You’d be interested to find out that ……. I have a lot of respect for the governing system in Canada. For those who know me, you are well aware that I will always be a proud Canadian! However, that is not the symbolism in the banner.
The next interpretation is that my look is right. Like I’m suggesting that my perspective and opinions are correct. How arrogant would that be? I advocate that every single human possesses their own unique view of the world, and that none are any more right than any other.
What’s my interpretation of Look Right? The theme really signifies that variety is the spice of life. Would you see those words printed in the streets in any other country in the world? No. So, the UK is special? Yes. They have a unique culture, in which drivers use the left side of the road. This custom is important because it’s different.
I am a great supporter of diversity. The world is an amazing place. As soon as we start living beyond ourselves, we quickly realize how important the contrast really is.
